What this lesson solves
After learning blockchains and smart contracts, the natural next question is what these systems are used for in practice. DeFi is one of the most important answers. This lesson builds a high-level map before going into product-specific details.
What DeFi is
DeFi stands for decentralized finance. It is an open financial system built on blockchains and smart contracts.
Its difference from traditional finance is not that all intermediaries disappear. The difference is that:
- more rules are enforced by contracts
- state is publicly verifiable
- products are easier to compose
- users can interact with protocols directly
The common building blocks
Stablecoins
Stablecoins provide a relatively stable unit of account and act as the settlement layer for many DeFi systems.
Decentralized exchanges
Decentralized exchanges provide asset swaps and are central to liquidity.
Lending protocols
Lending protocols manage deposits, borrowing, collateral, and liquidation.
Derivatives and structured products
This layer adds more complex financial tools such as leverage, options, and yield-structured products.
Yield aggregators and strategy systems
This layer moves assets across protocols in search of better capital efficiency or yield.
Why DeFi is composable
DeFi grows quickly because protocols can use one another as modules:
- stablecoins can be deposited into lending markets
- borrowed assets can be moved into liquidity pools
- receipt tokens can become collateral elsewhere
That structure behaves like financial Lego.
It speeds up innovation, but it also allows risk to travel through dependencies.
Why liquidity is central
Whether a DeFi product works often depends on liquidity. Without enough liquidity:
- swaps suffer from large slippage
- lending becomes less efficient
- liquidations become harder to execute
- prices become less reliable
So what looks like a “protocol problem” is often a liquidity problem underneath.
Where risk comes from
DeFi risk usually comes from four places:
Contract risk
Bugs or flawed permission design in the code.
Mechanism risk
The economic design itself may fail under stress.
Liquidity risk
Assets may not be easy to exit, swap, or liquidate when needed.
Dependency risk
Oracles, bridges, stablecoins, or upstream protocols can become points of failure.
How this fits AI × Web3
When AI meets DeFi, two broad patterns appear most often:
- understanding layer: research, summaries, monitoring, and decision support
- execution layer: allocation, rebalancing, and rule-based onchain action
The first is mostly analytical. The second carries the real risk, because it touches assets and permissions.
